FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have my piano tuned?

Most piano makers and showrooms suggest tuning your piano about every six to twelve months, though it can depend on where the piano is kept. Things like humidity and temperature really affect how well it stays in tune. If the environment is steady, your piano will hold its tuning better. But if there are a lot of ups and downs in temperature or humidity, the pin block can swell or loosen a bit, which can throw the tuning off. Here in the Phoenix area, high temperatures and lack of humidity can affect tuning quite a bit.

How can I tell if my piano is out of tune?

At first, you might notice one of the notes sounding wavy or unstable—or the entire piano may take on a tinny, "honky-tonk" quality. These are clear signs that your piano needs tuning. Usually, the tuning will deteriorate further over time. If the piano becomes significantly out of tune, it may require a pitch raise—a process where the instrument is tuned two or three times in one session, to restore it to standard pitch.

Will moving a piano put it out of tune?

Yes, moving a piano can affect the tuning due to vibration during the move, or a new location with different temperature or humidity.
